Holy Baptism and Confirmation

Baptisms take place during the Sunday Parish Eucharist at 10.00am.

We rejoice in welcoming adults and young people to baptism, following a short course of preparation with the clergy.

Also, for many centuries parents who counted themselves members of the Christian Church have brought their children to be baptized. When a child is baptized (or Christened, both words mean the same) s/he is welcomed into the household of God and made a member of the church. It is the start of a journey.

In Baptism we are made members of Christ’s Body, and we die and rise to new life with Christ and in Christ.

The people who were baptized in the time of Jesus were all adults. In the earliest days of the church only adults were baptized and this is still the custom in some Christian traditions. As time passed, parents asked if their children could also be baptized and this custom was established. Children are baptized on the understanding that their parents and Godparents will bring them up in the faith of Christ, finding their place in the Church.

We also support people in being Confirmed by the Bishop. Confirmation is administered when a person is ready to claim their Christian faith for themselves, when a child comes of age, or soon after Baptism in the case of adult candidates.

If you are considering Baptism or Confirmation, either for yourself or your child, please do get in touch with us, as we'll be only too happy to help.

We look forward to seeing you again

Many baptism families do stay in touch and worship with us here on Sunday mornings on a regular basis. This is wonderful.

Each year we have “Welcome Back Sunday” on the second Sunday in May at the 10.00am Parish Eucharist, when we invite those who have been baptized, married or have worshipped here and moved away. Do come along!

This is a popular service and there is a chance afterwards to share celebrating your life and relationship with others.
